The GDF (Gewerkschaft de Flugischerung), the union for air traffic workers, announced a strike for Thursday, February 16th, from 3 p.m to 10.p.m and on Friday 17th February from 8.a.m to 10.p.m, over a workers’ wages dispute. Consequently 172 flights were cancelled yesterday with a further 280 cancellations today. The 280 flights cancelled today represents 22% of all flights due out from Frankfurt airport, with the majority of cancellations belonging to Deutsche Lufthansa.

FedEx recently released its results for Q2, 2011 which outlines an incredible performance. Revenue is up 10% to $10.59 billion, operating income is up 66% to $469 million and net income is up a whopping 76%, to $497 million.
FedEx puts down a lot of this strong performance to the higher yields and volumes achieved by FedEx Ground. Another reason for the increase profitability is the timing lags which exists between when fuel charges change and when indexed fuel charges automatically adjust. FedEx Express’s operating income was up 10% to $6.58 billion whilst FedEx Grounds operating income was up 34% to $398 million.
Boeings employee relations have faced turbulent times in recent months as the Union Of Machinists launched a federal complaint against the company for opening a $750m non-union plant in South Carolina.
However, in early December the union agreed to drop the federal complaint. A tentative agreement was reached between Boeing and the uinions whereby Boeing gets stability in the workforce whereby the Boeing gets stability in the workforce whereby the machinists’ collective bargaining agreement is extended by 4 years in return for a guarantee on jobs.

The AAPA (Association of Asia Pacific Airlines) reported a 7.7% drop in freight tonne kilometres in October which was put down to weak global demand, especially from Europe and North America.
Overall Asia-Pacific Air cargo is down 4.5% year to date.
However Andrew Herdmand, AAPA general, is optimistic for the future and cites recent fleet expansions and more innovation by air carriers as major reasons for optimism.
